The most listed occupation is social workers (SOC 2461), with 65. Salary rules are national: generally £41,700 or the going rate, if higher. The licence is the employer's, not the vacancy's.

Care providers regulated by the CQC (or the devolved equivalents) hold a large share of sponsor licences. New overseas applications for care worker and senior care worker roles (SOC 6135 and 6136) closed on 22 July 2025, and those listings carry that note. Social work, care management and community support occupations are unaffected by that change. Check the occupation code on any offer before relying on it.
Adult social care employers are the second largest group on the sponsor register after the NHS: residential and nursing home operators, supported living and domiciliary care agencies, charities supporting people with learning disabilities or mental ill health, and the local authorities that commission and sometimes deliver care. In England they are regulated by the Care Quality Commission; the Care Inspectorate in Scotland, Care Inspectorate Wales and the RQIA in Northern Ireland do the same job in the devolved nations. A provider's inspection rating is public and is separate from its sponsor licence.
The occupation codes in this hub split into two groups with very different rules. Social workers (SOC 2461), residential, day and domiciliary care managers (1232) and youth and community workers (3221) remain on the Skilled Worker eligible list. Care workers and home carers (6135) and senior care workers (6136) were closed to new overseas applications on 22 July 2025, with transitional arrangements for people already employed in those occupations in the UK running until 22 July 2028. Listings in those two codes stay on the site because many readers already hold the right to work in the UK, and every one of them carries that note.
Social work and care management are among the occupations GOV.UK lists for the Health and Care Worker visa when the employer is an NHS body, an NHS supplier or an adult social care provider, which means a lower application fee and no immigration health surcharge. Social workers also need registration: Social Work England, the Scottish Social Services Council, Social Care Wales or the Northern Ireland Social Care Council, depending on where the post is. Adverts for registered posts normally say so in the person specification.
Pay in the sector varies more than in the NHS. Council social workers are paid on the National Joint Council spine with locally set grades; independent providers set their own rates, and care manager salaries depend on the size and registration category of the service. The general threshold is £41,700, with £33,400 for new entrants under the published conditions, and the Home Office going rate for each code is compared with it; the Health and Care Worker route has its own lower floor for codes on its list. All of these figures are published on GOV.UK and change with the immigration rules.
A support worker title can sit under several codes, so the card shows the occupation we classified the advert to and any route note attached to that code. Before relying on an offer, ask the provider which code it intends to use on the Certificate of Sponsorship, whether the service is registered with the relevant inspectorate, and whether the post is open to a certificate at all. Agency and umbrella arrangements deserve extra care: the licence must be held by the organisation that will employ the worker, and the register names that organisation.
