How these figures are made

The Home Office publishes the register of licensed sponsors as a spreadsheet, most working days, with no history. SkilledJobs downloads it daily and keeps every copy. An organisation counts as added in the month it first appears in our copies and as removed in the month it stops appearing. Both columns count the whole register, including organisations we do not publish a page for, so they share one denominator. The month the mirror started is left out: its first-seen dates are the initial import, not new licences.

The sector breakdown uses the primary industry code of the organisation at Companies House, folded into the same categories as the sponsor list by sector; organisations without a usable match are grouped as other sectors. The register itself does not say why a licence ended, so this page says removed and nothing more. The organisations behind the latest figures are listed on recently added sponsors, and any single employer can be checked with the free sponsor licence check.

Common questions

How often does the Home Office register of licensed sponsors change?

The Home Office publishes the register most working days. Organisations appear when a licence is granted and disappear when a licence ends, so the list moves every week. This page keeps a daily copy and counts the organisations that appeared or left in each calendar month.

Does a removal mean the licence was revoked?

Not necessarily. The register does not publish the reason an organisation leaves it: a licence can be surrendered, allowed to expire, suspended or revoked, and a company can change name or merge. We say removed, never revoked, because removed is all the data shows.

Why do your monthly figures differ from the total change in the GOV.UK file?

Two reasons. We count every organisation in our copy of the register, including ones we do not publish a page for, so additions and removals share one denominator. And an organisation can be added and removed in the same month, which counts once in each column. The month the mirror started is left out because its first-seen dates are our initial import, not licences being granted.

Can I use these figures?

Yes. Cite the page and the month. The underlying source is the public Home Office register of licensed sponsors, published under the Open Government Licence; the monthly counts and the sector and town breakdowns are our own derived data, rebuilt daily.
