Main contractors and specialist subcontractors hold licences for professional, technical and skilled trade roles. Trades such as bricklaying, carpentry and plastering became eligible occupations in 2024, so sponsored trade vacancies now appear alongside surveying and project management.
Main contractors, housebuilders, civil engineering firms, specialist subcontractors and the consultancies that design and cost their projects hold sponsor licences. Professional services firms in surveying and planning have used the route for years; trade contractors joined in numbers once the skilled trades became eligible occupations in 2024. The listings here are at employers whose registered names match the Home Office register of licensed sponsors.
The professional codes are quantity surveyors (SOC 2453), architects (2451), town planning officers (2452) and chartered surveyors (2455). The trade codes are bricklayers and masons (5312), roofers, roof tilers and slaters (5313), plumbers and heating and ventilating installers (5314), carpenters and joiners (5315), glaziers and window fitters (5316), construction and building trades not elsewhere classified (5319) and construction trades supervisors (5330). Each has its own going rate published by the Home Office, compared with the general threshold of £41,700; the higher figure is the bar.
The trade codes sit below RQF level 6. Since 22 July 2025 the standard skill threshold for the route has been RQF level 6, and occupations below that level remain eligible only while they appear on the Immigration Salary List or the Temporary Shortage List, both of which GOV.UK publishes and revises. Which trades appear, and for how long, changes between versions, so the current list is the only reliable source for a given code.
Surveying and planning posts usually ask for chartered status or progress towards it: RICS for quantity and chartered surveyors, the ARB register for anyone using the title architect, and RTPI membership for planners. Trades need the relevant CSCS card for site access and, for gas and electrical work, Gas Safe or NICEIC registration. Pay is set by the employer; there is no national scale, and many trade adverts quote hourly or day rates that need converting to an annual basic salary for the stated hours before any comparison with the threshold.
The card shows the advertised salary where the advert states one, and how it sits against the published threshold. Self-employed, CIS and agency arrangements are common in construction and do not fit the Skilled Worker route, which needs the licence holder to employ the worker directly. Before relying on an advert, confirm with the employer the code it would assign, whether the post is direct employment, and whether it is open to a Certificate of Sponsorship.
