Eligible occupation codes present in these listings. Each links to the code's going rate, eligibility notes and sponsors.
Schools, academy trusts, colleges and universities are licensed sponsors, and the Skilled Worker route is the main path for overseas teachers now that the teaching codes sit on the Immigration Salary List. Qualified teacher status or its equivalent is normally required.
Schools, multi-academy trusts, further education colleges, sixth-form colleges, universities and independent schools all hold sponsor licences, and together they are one of the largest groups on the register. Universities have used the route for academic and research posts for decades; schools joined in numbers after 2021 as teacher shortages grew. Listings here are at employers whose registered names match the Home Office register, including trusts whose registered name differs from the school named on the advert.
The codes are higher education teaching professionals (SOC 2311), further education teaching professionals (2312), secondary education teaching professionals (2313), primary education teaching professionals (2314), nursery education teaching professionals (2315), special and additional needs education teaching professionals (2316), teaching professionals not elsewhere classified (2319) and teaching assistants (6113). The teaching assistant code sits below RQF level 6; the professional codes are at level 6. Since 22 July 2025 the standard skill threshold for the route has been RQF level 6, and occupations below that level remain eligible only while they appear on the Immigration Salary List or the Temporary Shortage List, both of which GOV.UK publishes and revises.
Secondary teaching appears on the Immigration Salary List for named subjects, which lowers the general threshold for those posts; the list specifies the subjects and GOV.UK publishes the current version. Teachers in maintained schools in England are paid on national pay ranges set by the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document, with higher ranges for inner, outer and fringe London, and the Home Office treats those posts as national pay scale occupations, assessed against the scale rather than the general threshold of £41,700. Academies may set their own pay but most follow the national ranges. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland publish their own teacher scales.
Qualified teacher status is required for most teaching posts in maintained schools in England. Teachers trained in some countries can apply for QTS recognition through the Teaching Regulation Agency; others qualify through assessment-only or training routes. Scotland requires registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Wales with the Education Workforce Council and Northern Ireland with the GTCNI. Universities and colleges set their own requirements, usually a postgraduate degree and, for lecturers, a teaching qualification or progress towards one.
The card shows the advertised salary or pay range against the published threshold. Teaching adverts often quote a scale point such as M1 or UPS rather than a figure; the scale is public and the trust can confirm the figure. Before relying on an advert, confirm with the school or trust which code it would assign, whether the post is open to a Certificate of Sponsorship, and whether the advertised range includes a London allowance or a TLR payment, which the rules treat differently from basic pay.
Check your own position with the eligibility checker or the salary calculator, and confirm with the employer that the role you want is open to sponsorship.
